Midgard, the world's largest Duchy, has long been expected to become a kingdom. The reasons behind its continued status as a Duchy lay between the Emperors of Atlantis and its current ruler, Duke Harald. One thing's for sure: the initial encounter between Emperor Athos and Duke Harald did not go smoothly.

Set in his ways

Rumor has it that Duke Harald committed an astonishing number of faux pas in the presence of the protocol-loving Emperor Athos of Atlantis. Consequently, Midgard remains a close ally of Atlantis, but as an independent nation without a king.

FAMILY TIES & UNEXPECTED FRIENDSHIPS

Despite the tension, the ruling families of Atlantis and Midgard share a strong connection, with Duke Harald married to Princess Iris, a cousin of Emperor Athos. The Duke, determined to produce a male heir, has fathered seven daughters, the second of whom, Kára, is best friends with, and the closest confidant with Atlas. Whilst he constantly bickers about how much Kara irritates him, there is little doubt that she is the apple of his eye. With that said, the Duke’s relationship with his favourite daughter can often be an explosive one.

THE ECCENTRIC RULE OF DUKE HARALD

Known for his grumpy, pompous demeanor, Harald governs Midgard with grandiosity, sometimes overlooking the long-term consequences of his decisions. The costly maintenance of the Bifrost bridges is a prime example. Nonetheless, the trillions in funding from Atlantis grant him control over the strategic barrier between Atlantis and Rome, and even more significantly, one of the barriers between Atlantis and the United States.
